1 | awkward guy touching

in one day, i was hugged, bear hugged, butt-slapped, massaged, slapped, kicked, high-fived, fist-pounded, chest groped, and tackled.

these events were NOT fabricated. it happened today, and i wish i could say this was out of the ordinary. it’s not.

the subject of this weeks “things that can only happen in bible college” is, you guessed it: AWKWARD GUY TOUCHING

what is it about the male bible college student that drives him to make physical contact with other males so badly, and in such awkward ways?

i should note, i am not a “touchy-feely” person. fist bumps and high fives are my style. the side hug is as close as it gets for me with other guys (with the patented three slaps on the back), in terms of comfort. for more on the side hug, check out SCL. a regular, old-fashioned hug from another guy is just too much for me. i walk around with a two foot bubble around me. maybe that’s just me…

back to our original question, why the need for male physical guy-ness at bible college? well i have some thoughts:

church promotion at its finest

easter is the busiest day of the year for most churches, maybe promotions like these are the reason why. i very much wish i could take credit for this discovery, but i found this picture over at this blog, and just had to share it…

to tweet or not to tweet

as twitter has grown from the butt of social networking jokes to a global phenomenon, more and more opinions have started to arise about the site, so I thought I’d weight in.

but first, for those of you who don’t know what twitter is, here is  the simplest definition I’ve found out there: twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, “What are you doing?” by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called “tweets”, to your friends, or “followers.” one can interact with the twitter system through various mediums: text messages, iPhones apps (or blackberry or droid for that matter), through the twitter website, or through your own API.

now, I must admit that I am on twitter, and have been for some time. some would consider this a bias in favor of the tweets, rather i think this might provide an accurate perspective of the downsides of twitter.

but first, lets start with the good stuffContinue Reading…

.5 | inside the bible college sudent’s man-purse

attending bible college has opened my eyes to the wondrous fact that i am not alone in carrying a man-bag/satchel/messenger bag or the loosely defined “laptop bag.” (those wanting to claim the namesake “laptop bag” are just simply in denial)

so as we all know, every college student always comes adequately prepared for class… and even on time. right?

but seriously folks, there are usually a few things the average college student is rarely with out: Continue Reading…

when technology can get in the way

this is a bit peculiar. my first real post on technology is going to start from left field, as it were. before we dive into technology and how it can be useful in ministry, i feel as though we must first address the issue of technology dominating everything else. in case y’all are wondering, my stance is that technology should enhance and simplify ministry, not overtake it. i have seen over the years, even in my own ministry experience, ministry staffers get so excited about using tech in their ministry (which intrinsically is not a bad thing) that they let it dictate the goings on of their ministry. so i feel i must share an experience of mine to kick this off… Continue Reading…

12 albums that will electro-rock your world

i realize that i am nowhere near the normal “year in review” time when it come to music. most choose december, as year end, or january as the beginning of the year look back approach, but hey, this blog is meant to be different. and i choose to hold the ever so typical “year in review” of music in march. after all, this is’nt just any music review, it’s the technology and music review. and, i don’t know about anyone else, but i would choose to pass on yet another top ten list…

so instead, i give you the top 12 albums (in my humble opinion) fusing tech and music together. yes, i’m sure there are other albums amongst us that should be considered, but i have decided to choose not only based on criteria of the aforementioned fusion, but my personal liking and listenability, and who knows, maybe danceability.

albums are listed alphabetically as to not show favoritism, because i’m sure favoritism will arise in the following critique, and i wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise… Continue Reading…

why?

why the need for another technology and ministry blog?

that’s a fair question. but before i can answer accurately, i think we need a moment to reminisce on how far technology has come in the past few years. ten years ago, only the elite or the businessman on the go had a cell phone. ten years ago, laptops were more the size of microwaves. ten years ago, one would never think that a space on the wold wide web would influence how we think about almost everything, let alone new visitors to a church.

we have come a long way. which can be both good and bad. sadly, for many ministries, this would fall into the bad category, simply because they do not take advantage of the tools at hand. it saddens me to hear a youth pastor responding to an inquiry of a students, saying “twitter’s lame?” or “how do i post a picture to facebook” or “i just don’t use that social media stuff.” now to some of you, that may seem farfetched, being unaware of the technology around us, but for some reading, you have genuinely fallen behind the times. do not fear. i am not advocating that everyone should be glued to their computers. i am simply saying there are tools right at your fingertips, and to simply dismiss them is utter ignorance and arrogance.

what i would love to accomplish in this space, is to educate those who need it, motivate those who need it and to unlock your own desires and creativity in technology, music and ministry. Continue Reading…
