13 | pre-dawn bible studies

i make my own coffee in the morning, thanks to what i call the “magic machine” in our house. but on those rare occasions i make a pitstop at starbucks or panera to grab some coffee before class, i notice something interesting.

now, being a bit of a conspiracy theorist, i usually assume that i’ve jumped fifty steps ahead in any logical sequence, but my paranoia was confirmed just this morning, by a fellow classmate and buddy, eric.

if you arrive at any given starbucks or panera or coffee bean or what have you, if you’re near a bible college, chances are the majority of the people in the room are praying, or reading the bible, or talking about christiany things. don’t believe me? head over to panera before the sun rises and you will catch the whole restaurant praying.

my friend, eric, went to panera this morning for, you guessed it, an early morning hang out time, just talk about life, and noticed just about everyone else in the place was doing the same thing!

so what about pre-dawn bible chats interest christians so much? i have come to a couple conclusions:

1 | by nature, christians are breakfasty people.

it’s true, bacon is delicious, and since where are not under the old law, christians have been feasting on bacon ever since paul said enjoy the pork!

2 | gettin some prayin done before you get some sinnin done.

a little preemptive prayer never hurt anyone!

3 | coffee is the official liquid of christians.

if you’re drinking coffee right now, reading this post, you’ve just proven my point.

4 | bragging rights.

the earlier you wake up to read through the levitical laws, the more street cred you get from your fellow bible college students.

5 | creating an excuse for sleeping in class

there’s no better excuse for nodding off in your class than “sorry, i was up REALLY early praying…”

6 | being a light

in all seriousness, i love when i walk into public places and see other christians praying, reading the bible or just chatting about life.

taking your bible study or prayer group public, rather than staying in your church or house is a great way to provoke some meaningful conversations with people. the next time you pray our in public, try throwing a sign up saying “need prayer?” and maybe asking to pray for people around you.

so go forth and drink coffee, eat breakfast and dominate those coffee shops!
