5 | married people being way more graphic than single folks

first things first, I’m going to give a little shout out to abe, a hilarious dude in my class this summer who’s been dying to get me to write a blog post about one of his ideas. not sure if this is what he meant, but here we go…

many of the themes of this blog are highlighting the differences between attending a bible college and a normal college. (and yes, I very much mean to imply that bible college is in no way “normal”) today is no different.

I’ve been finding that the married population of EBC tends to be far more graphic than those who are single. who is it cracking sex jokes in the middle of class? yup, it’s the happily married dude. I’ve concluded there are only a few reasons for this behavior:

4 | john piper man crushes

when i first moved to LA, i expected bible college guys to be talking about, well something other than a sixty year old man. maybe football, baseball or quoting some movie. instead, i found the guys quoting from something else. not only quoting but ogling.

indeed, i did save this post until the end of my semester because only learning about this staple of post-christianity america my first week here, i was just so uninformed. i had no idea what was coming my way…

inside the bible college sudent’s man-purse: part 2

a little while ago i wrote about bible college students and their bodacious man bags. i had a lot of fun writing it, and poking fun at some of my buddies in bible college. stuff like the esv bible, an iPhone, snacks are just a few mentioned.

but the list was incomplete. some very astute folks informed me what was in their man purse, so i began the trek to add to my collection. and as divinely inspiried providence would have it, there were a few more that needed inclusion.

so here’s the follow up on the dissection of the man purse…

3 | hating on TV

i was having a conversation with a friend the other day, and in the midst of my speaking of a particularly confusing episode of a particular group stranded on a moving island that travels through time and space (hint: not giligan’s island), this person made a sweeping statement: “i hate tv!”

later the week, i was having a conversation with another friend, and he said, “i just don’t like watching tv.”

someone else said, “i just think tv is such a waste of time!”

bible college students hate tv.

2 | auditors knowing more than the professors

in my previous collegial experience, there were no auditors. auditors, for those that don’t know, are students (often older than the average college student) who can sit in on the lectures of any given class, but not take it for credit, meaning a grade.

Currently EBC, the college i’m  at, offers a free audit program, which is pretty sweet, so you can get your bible education on without laying down big bucks or taking finals. so for a bible college, auditing is a pretty cool deal, but who wants to audit a social psychology class? exactly! so before my trek down south, no auditors, now, auditors in every class.

let me first start by showing my appreciation for these wonderful people. like i mentioned earlier, auditors, more often than not, tend to skew older in age. which is amazing. for all of us young bible college students who think we know it all, it’s great to have some other students in the class who have lived life and can give insight into their wisdom and experience. i’ve heard some amazing stories from some very humble people and i so appreciate what they bring to the proverbial table.

but, in some cases, those gosh darn auditors can get a little zealous. Continue Reading…

context is king, unicorns are biblical

thank you doug main for your contribution to my title.

a few weeks ago, one of my college professors challenged us to pick a few bible verses, out of context, and create our own theology based on those verses. well, i think it was more of a joke and less of a challenge, but we took his point. you see, when taken out of context, you can make any bible verse, or any quote from any text for that matter, say whatever you want it to say.

that is why context is king.

we have to know the surrounding texts and information about that text to accurately determine what is being communicated through that author. without that, we walk away with the makings of a good old fashioned cult.

anyone up for some kool-aid?

so of course, i accepted the challenge:

1 | awkward guy touching

in one day, i was hugged, bear hugged, butt-slapped, massaged, slapped, kicked, high-fived, fist-pounded, chest groped, and tackled.

these events were NOT fabricated. it happened today, and i wish i could say this was out of the ordinary. it’s not.

the subject of this weeks “things that can only happen in bible college” is, you guessed it: AWKWARD GUY TOUCHING

what is it about the male bible college student that drives him to make physical contact with other males so badly, and in such awkward ways?

i should note, i am not a “touchy-feely” person. fist bumps and high fives are my style. the side hug is as close as it gets for me with other guys (with the patented three slaps on the back), in terms of comfort. for more on the side hug, check out SCL. a regular, old-fashioned hug from another guy is just too much for me. i walk around with a two foot bubble around me. maybe that’s just me…

back to our original question, why the need for male physical guy-ness at bible college? well i have some thoughts:

.5 | inside the bible college sudent’s man-purse

attending bible college has opened my eyes to the wondrous fact that i am not alone in carrying a man-bag/satchel/messenger bag or the loosely defined “laptop bag.” (those wanting to claim the namesake “laptop bag” are just simply in denial)

so as we all know, every college student always comes adequately prepared for class… and even on time. right?

but seriously folks, there are usually a few things the average college student is rarely with out: Continue Reading…
