music monday: and we’re back!

Ok folks, over the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking how to improve, not only this area of 6MOB, but also my personal listening experience.

I believe I have found that solution. Rdio. I’m not usually a “sell-out,” but this is worth it. Producer Dan, from the podcast, turned me on to this one, and it’s changed how I listen to music entirely.

In light of this new discovery, today, I have new music for you:

music monday: electro edition

for all you electro heads out there, this is your week! another curveball: there will be six songs. i know, i know… things are a changin!

end of line | tron legacy soundtrack

DAFT PUNK

this really was a tie between the game has changed and end of line. both songs are suer epic, but the winner, end of line, took the prize for its little 8-bit insertions about two thirds of the way through. crisis averted.

my girls | merriweather post pavillion

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE

i know i have wrote about these guys before, but its because they are simply awesome. this is by far the catchiest of their songs of the merriweather post pavilion album.

blackout city | dawn metropolis

ANAMAGUCHI

ever wish you could relive the old video games of yesteryear? welcome to anamanguchi. an incredibly fun to say, and a fun band to listen to. everything is in 8-bit and sounds like you should be fighting off pixely monsters.

phantom 2 | cross

JUSTICE

if you didn’t want to dance before, you will now. obviously, this tune is much more popular than its brother “phantom.” they should have switched these songs on the album… really, what were they thinking?

teen angst | before the dawn heals us

M83

true electro mania. i’m blown away by every album these guys put out, they all seem to have their own flavor. this tune will fill any room, any size, with massive amounts of bass and warmth.

don’t be afraid, you have just got your eyes closed | finally we are no one

MUM

looking for a laid back electronic tune? this whole album is amazing, and is perfect to have in the background for almost any activity, but the minute you turn it up, you have sweet beats and addictive melody lines to occupy your brain.

music monday: church music

well this week, i believe its time to throw the spotlight on church music, or music sung in churches. for those of you budding worship bands, here are some good places to start.

birmingham (we are safe) | church music

DAVID CROWDER BAND

a list like this simply cannot be compiled without including dave and the guys. while i would love to spend the entire post talking about all of their songs, one will have to do. this song is a great example of where church music is going (or could go) with a more up-front electronic feel.

chainbreaker | the bright sadness

CHARLIE HALL

hall’s albums are always amazing. this dude, rockin a pretty hefty beard, is always sporting unique releases. every album has a different feel to them, and “the bright sadness” is a great break out from the usual. i first heard a lot of these at passion a little while back and was blown away. tunes like chainbreaker, walk this world, mystery and hookers and robbers just stay with you all day.

all my fountains | passion – here for you

CHRIS TOMLIN

i stinking love the passion crew, and whenever they pump out a new album, i’m one of the first to pick it up. this year’s album was a little tomlin heavy, but looks like he came to the table with some innovative stuff this year. “all my fountains” is probably one of my favorite tunes from the latest passion release.

king of glory | elevator music

LIVE WORSHIP FROM VINEYARD or MUTEMATH

this is fun because this is pretty underground stuff. one of my favorite bands, hands down, is mutemath. when my buddy gave me a live cd of them doing some worship tunes a few years back, i feel in love. its amazing. now, there’s no link, because its not on itunes, so you’ll have to hunt around for this one, but it’ll be worth it. some cool originals, and some sweet remakes of songs a lot of us sing in church today.

song of hope (heaven come down) | give yourself away

ROBBIE SEAY BAND

i really have an attachment to bands i discover before they make it big. these are one of those bands. these guys consistently have a great sound that i’ve been into for a long time, and i think everyone should check them out. i love the raspy voice. i love the thick bass lines. i love the way their songs grab you and throw you into the ring and make you want to do something.

music mondays: one hit wonders

this is the one hit wonder pop edition of music mondays.

this week is special, picks from albert, and picks from jake.

enjoy.

from albert:

i’m gonna be (500 miles) | sunshine on leith

THE PROCLAIMERS

everyone needs an iconic 80s one hit wonder in any given mix, the proclaimers do not disappoint. if you want something to sing along to in the car without nobody else in shouting distance, this is your tune.

unbelievable | schubert dip

EMF

the perfect one hit wonder. you know it’s great when it’s been remade and covered more times than you can count. it doesn’t matter if you know the song or not, chances are high that your ability to sing along will blow your mind.

ice ice baby | to the extreme

VANILLA ICE

we, of course, need a little “rap” in these proceedings. vanilla ice will represent. little needs to be said, except for the fact that vanilla ice actually had two one hit wonders, ice ice baby of course and then the ninja song. for the ninja turtles. that’s hard core.

come on eileen | too-rye-ay

DEXY’S MIDNIGHT RUNNERS

this is great. one of my favorites. if you have not heard this song, you need to download it stat, it will change your life. this song harkens back to movies like black sheep and tommy boy and just some gool ol nineties fun, even though i’m fairly certain this song was written in the eighties, it belongs n the nineties.

take on me | huntnig high and low

A-HA

well this one is an easy one, easy because you may not recognize the title of the album cover, but as soon as it drops, everyone is singing along. but, nobody really knows the words, and this is the perfect song for that, because if you yell loud enough, it sounds like your right there.

from jake:

one hit wonder | so much for the afterglow

EVERCLEAR

A day doesn’t go by that I am not harassed, mainly by Albert, about my love for the band Everclear. See you people don’t get it. When you think Everclear, you think “Father of Mine.” Well just stop it okay. I realize that right now I am listing Everclear as a one hit wonder type of band, but please look past your small appreciation of decent music and discover the greatness of Everclear, with their song that is all to appropriate, entitled: One Hit Wonder.

867-5309/jenny | tommy tutone 2

TOMMY TUTONE

Your favorite song and mine had to be mentioned here. Don’t act like you haven’t called this number, and if you haven’t go ahead and try it so that you can become more cultured than you already are. Hey did you guys know that Tommy Heath is signed again? Yeah he also works part time fixing computers… enjoy.

creep | pablo honey

RADIOHEAD

Had to do it.

We all know that it’s true. You can send hate mail to Albert.

screaming infidelities | the places you have come to fear the most

DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL

We all know that you had this song screaming through the speakers of your 91-accord sophomore year of high school, mourning the break up of you and your 3 week lady friend. That’s all there is to it You loved this song and pretended that you loved the rest.

shackles (praise you) | thankful

MARY MARY

Oh this song is quite the treat for all of you one hit wonder fanatics. I tried to go with something a little edgy for my fifth selection, so ladies and gentleman I give you… Mary Mary.

music mondays: oldies but goodies

this week’s theme for music mondays here at 6mob will be oldies. now, some reading this may think oldies all the way back to the 1800s. this will just not be. some others reading this may think “oldies? like the 90s?” also, not entirely true.

instead, this week’s selection will derive from a completely subjective collection from the author.

also, there us been a mini uproar about last week’s post and it’s objective look at simply the best music around. if you have are part of this small militia, i would encourage a response, highlighting what your thoughts are on better music. but let’s be sensible about this, and stick to our theme of the week (of course last week, being an introduction, is fair game).

so without further delay, oldies but goodies:

jump | totally crossed out

KRISS KROSS

ever want something that’s wigity wigity whack? don’t leave out some real hip hop with kris kross. the perfect song to get your moving and motivated. whether you were born in the 60s or the 90s, this song will surely “take you back to the good ol days.”

kashmir | physical graffiti

LED ZEPPELIN

everyone knows led zeppelin, but you have to dig a bit deeper than “rock and roll,” black dog,” and “dazed and confused” to get to the good stuff. songs like “kashmir,” “achilles last stand,” and “when the levee breaks” are where it’s at.

informer | 12 inches of snow

SNOW

was kris kross a little too hip hop? looking for a little whiteness to add into the mix without having to jump to the predictable vanilla ice? check out snow. the perfect mix of hip hop, reggae, horns, and whiteness. this will impress even the seasoned vintage hip hopper.

getaway | spirit

EARTH WIND & FIRE

this is just good music, i don’t care who you are. everyone needs a little funk, and earth wind & fire is the official funk provider for six minutes of banter. whether you’re in the mood for some good slow jamz (that’s right, i said it) or some good dancin music, the elements will never disappoint.

take 5 | time out

THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET

a little jazz to class up these festivities is in order. there’s no better place to start with the ivory master, dave brubeck, and his constant flow of incredible talented musicians. pick up the album “time out,” you will not be disappointed.

there are so many more bands who deserve to be on this list, but we have to limit it to the top five for the week. keep you eyes peeled for a possible follow up to the oldies but goodies edition of music mondays.

music mondays: an introduction

mondays are rough. to get you through the first day of the working week, every monday we here at 6MOB are going to be submitting the top five songs on our current playlist.

this week, we begin.

1. morning mr. magpie | the king of limbs

RADIOHEAD

no such post would be worthy of writing without mentioning the ever astounding radiohead. they’re latest album, a surprise to fans, is chalked full of electronic goodness and vocal magic. this is definitely the sing that has been haunting me for a while.

2. white blank page | sigh no more

MUMFORD & SONS

a refreshing take on some bluegrass musical delight. if you are now just jumping on the mumf bangwagon, like me, this song is amazing. buy the album and give a good listen, but also check out some of their live stuff on youtube, they kill it.

3. teardrop | in our nature

JOSE GONZALES

jose snuck under the radar this week, but with a sensational cover of “teardrop” by massive attack, this album has been on my most listened to playlist all week. if you like unplugged style music, but are sick of all of the boring junk out there, check out jose.

4. prenzlauerberg | gulag orkestar

BEIRUT

this game is no fun without a few random french bands ya? beirut is amazing, and they capture that quintessential french pop/obscure/accordion essence wonderfully. closing your eyes and listening to this album will accurately place you mind in little french cafe gazing at life happening around you.

5. lisztomania (Classixx Version) | lisztomania remixes ep

PHOENIX

a brilliant take on an awesome tune from phoenix. the classixx version of lisztomania easily took a impending pop song, and reclaimed the minority adding some electro/hip hop beats.

enjoy.
