great summer albums

need some new music? how about some summertime albums? i think so. i saw this over relevant magazine and had to share. here are two of my recommendations:

Holy Ghost!, Static on the Wire EP

The party’s over, and it’s time to head out. You might be headed to a club, to a friend’s house or just back to a beach to watch the waves crash in. On the car ride there, you need to throw this on—it captures the energy and the ambience of a city starting to come alive at night. It will serve as an after-dinner recharge and by the end, you’ll be ready to dance a little bit.

Suggested track: “Static on the Wire”

Paper Route, Additions (Remixes) EP

Did you know Paper Route got remixed? By amazing artists like Son Lux and Passion Pit? You should check this out. Plus, it’s the perfect way to start to wind down your perfect summer day. It’s still bouncy enough that it’s not going to make you fall asleep while driving, but it’s laid-back enough that it can pull you into that perfect “this was the best day and I’m so happy I’m with these people” daze that accompanies the greatest days.

Suggested track: “Tiger Teeth (Passion Pit Remix)”

album review: "summer happiness" by DAVID CROWDER* BAND

David Crowder* Band is very predictable. and quite thematic. following their pattern of a mid-project, project, today, David Crowder* Band released a four song EP on iTunes. if you’re unfamiliar with the aforementioned pattern, take a look at their history of studio albums followed by side projects (“can you hear us?” then “the lime cd,” illuminate” then “sunsets and sushi,” “a collision” then “b collision,” remedy then “remedy club tour” and so on…)

this is probably the greatest acoustic album i’ve listened to, well, probably because it’s not very acoustic.

what your music says about your hipster self

the other day i was having coffee with a few buddies from my school, and we stumbled on the topic of “hipsters” (after of course discussing at length my current favorite website). while i successfully navigated the site, took my hipster test, and reviewed the results, i was unsatisfied with the given criteria.

let me be clear, i am not a hipster.

so after much discussion about what is hipster and what isn’t in today’s culture, i decided to take on the daunting task of compiling a little test, using the medium of music, to find out if you’re a hipster or not.

we’ll less of test, and more of an internal checklist. chances are, though, that i’m revealing to you the top secret music barometer for hipsters, that may cause the music to become too mainstream, in turn, giving hipsters the grounds to disown these staples.

we are going to move through the more “popular” groups, then head down toward more specific regions of the hipster community. i’ll be using some bands i’ve previously wrote about in hopes of breeding familiarity. take every band as a fair represetetive of the sub-genre it represents. or not. here we go…

album review: "go" by JONSI

I, having a long (and let’s face it, if you’ve ever listened to anything of theirs, emotional) history with music of sigur ros, was tickled fancy when the prospect of a solo album from jonsi started appearing. so much so, I even shouted it from my own little rooftop in a previous blog post. I bought the single from itunes, the day I was legally allowed and wore that record out! (figuratively speaking of course, as my iPhone does not play records… is there an app for that?)

expectations were understandably very high. Continue Reading…

album review: "congratulations" by MGMT

well it’s been about two years since mgmt debuted their “oracular spectacular” album we so eagerly put on repeat for days at a time. poppy songs like “kids,” “time to pretend,” and “electric feel” made their previous album just delightful to the ears. later, we were given mediocre remixes of some of the favorites, but with the original synth pop lines still running back and and forth through our brain, we were ready for another installment.

debut solo album from Jonsi of Sigur Ros

that’s right, Jonsi from Sigur Ros has a solo project, and it hits the states April 6th! the album is titled “Go,” and we here at Six minutes of Banter are very excited about this release. i have personally listened to it in its entirety about 4 times since yesterday, and am pretty psyched about having it in my possession next week.

you can stream it, for free, from NPR here before it hits iTunes, and the great thing about that, is you can listen directly on your iPhone or iPod from NPR’s website.

for more special offers, awesome packages, and info head over to Jonsi’s official website here.

all in all, this looks like a pretty epic work from Jonsi. I’ll give a song by song review of the new album next week, but for now, head over to NPR or Jonsi’s site and check it out for yourself.

12 albums that will electro-rock your world

i realize that i am nowhere near the normal “year in review” time when it come to music. most choose december, as year end, or january as the beginning of the year look back approach, but hey, this blog is meant to be different. and i choose to hold the ever so typical “year in review” of music in march. after all, this is’nt just any music review, it’s the technology and music review. and, i don’t know about anyone else, but i would choose to pass on yet another top ten list…

so instead, i give you the top 12 albums (in my humble opinion) fusing tech and music together. yes, i’m sure there are other albums amongst us that should be considered, but i have decided to choose not only based on criteria of the aforementioned fusion, but my personal liking and listenability, and who knows, maybe danceability.

albums are listed alphabetically as to not show favoritism, because i’m sure favoritism will arise in the following critique, and i wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise… Continue Reading…
